Systems Integration and Infrastructure Development Engineer
WWW/Database Applications Engineer
CIRES/NSIDC Professional Research Assistant

Here is your chance to make a difference in the world of climate change. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) is looking for two Applications Engineers to develop and maintain leading-edge, web-based applications. The Systems Integration & Infrastructure Development Engineer helps to create a solid application framework using a service oriented architecture. The WWW/Database Applications Engineer develops web enabled services for geospatial data search and visualization by the end user. These applications make use of earth orbiting satellite data as well as ground-based data sets. NSIDC is a University of Colorado Center and a component of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES).

We are funded primarily by NASA, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NSIDC collects and distributes digital and analog snow and ice data. We perform leading edge cryospheric science and provide information about snow cover and avalanches, glaciers and ice sheets, floating ice, ground ice and permafrost, atmospheric ice, paleoglaciology and ice cores. We create and distribute data products on CD-ROM and other media. NSIDC has been extensively followed by the international media due to our expertise on the shrinking polar sea ice. Our mission is to make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth system and the changes we are now detecting.

NSIDC is one of eight Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) participating in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA’s) Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). Many satellite image and satellite derived products are contained within the aegis of the DAAC.

Job Overview

The Applications Engineer is one of a group of system developers at NSIDC implementing a Service Oriented Architecture through the use of Web enabled service technologies. Both positions require knowledge of software engineering practices and software development life-cycle. Services include the ingest, storage, retrieval, and application of data related to the study of the cryosphere. The Applications Engineer refactors existing applications to function as Web enabled services, configures and adapts existing applications for use at the Data Center, and develops new services. The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree and related work experience along with strong technical abilities. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, and an exceptional attention to detail are must haves, along with logical thinking ability and the ability to work with others as part of a team. A minimum of two years professional experience in a technical environment including application support and maintenance, and/or Web-based development is key. Ability to work with minimal supervision also required.

Web Services, SOA, HTML, JavaScript, and extensive experience with relational databases are required. Solid Linux/Unix user experience is also necessary. Knowledge of LDAP, CVS integration, lightweight development frameworks such as Spring, ORM, Rails, Hibernate, and a lack of reliance on commercial platforms and development environments are huge pluses. Experience creating test cases and previous exposure to Agile Methodologies and test-driven development are preferred. An ongoing passion for emerging technologies, open source, intranets, extranets and the Internet with all its dynamics is required.

Other key contributions include: a willingness to learn new things and be part of a dynamic team; creativity; excellent problem solving skills; knowledge of public sector business applications. The Applications Engineer develops documentation about the service and, as necessary, trains appropriate staff how to use the application. The position can report to multiple task managers. The position reports to the Systems Engineering Lead as Supervisor of Record.

Duties

  1. Install, configure, and maintain existing WWW/database applications and interfaces.
  2. Develop or support software required to enable interoperable Web enabled services at the Data Center.
  3. Implement full life-cycle experience. Test and document function, performance and reliability of WWW/database systems applications.
  4. Perform configuration management of both existing and new Web enabled services.
  5. Develop applications to parse and import information from various information resources into relational databases as needed.
  6. Develop scripts to generate reports based on information stored in the databases.
