Snow and ice photos contributed by NSIDC staff

These photos demonstrate various snow and ice phenomena as photographed by NSIDC staff members, former staff members, and their family.

Lake Ice Pileup

These two photos show lake ice pileup that occurred on the shores of Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, in the spring of 2001. Lake ice pileup occurs each spring during periods of ice break up, but when certain wind conditions coincide with the break up, large mounds of ice can result.

In the left photo, the ice pileup is covering a dock. While impressive, this amount of ice pileup can also be destructive, knocking over trees and destroying docks and homes along the shore. (Photographs courtesy of Hugh Nolin.) View larger versions (~120k) of the photos.

Glacier Calving

One of NSIDC's scientists took several photographs of Perito Moreno glacier as an iceberg was calving from the face of the glacier in February, 2001. (Photographs courtesy of Martyn Clark) View larger versions (~100k) of the series and read more about this calving event.
